Don't Jump to Conclusions

A Fable by Ayaan Wajid

Once upon a time there were two friends who lived in a beautiful forest; A zebra foal and a fox cub. They were best friends. They played together after school and were always found at each other's houses. They often liked to dress the same way too.

One day, Zebra's mom got him a beautiful new red hat. Zebra was very excited. He asked fox to join him at his home after school. When fox arrived, Zebra showed him the new hat. Fox liked it very much too. He even asked Zebra to let him wear it for a little while. Zebra's mom got them some nice green juice. Fox and Zebra quickly gulped part of it down before they ran out to play. The Zebra's sister came to the room and spilled some of the juice on the new hat. Zebra's mom picked up the hat and took it away for laundry.

Next day, Fox's mom surprised fox with a similar red hat. Fox was very happy and wanted to share his joy with his best friend Zebra when he got to school. But Zebra got upset when he saw the hat. The reason was, Zebra could not find his hat. When Zebra saw the red hat with Fox, Zebra presumed that the hat was his, and Fox took it away without asking him. Zebra did not know that his hat was with his own mom out for washing. Zebra did not talk to Fox whole day. Fox was very sad. He could not understand why Zebra was not happy and not sharing his joy for his new hat.

When Zebra got back home, his mom was just putting out the laundry to dry out in the sun. A red object immediately caught his attention. He ran forward and clear as day it was his hat indeed! Zebra felt very happy to have finally found his hat, immediately followed by a feeling of regret. He now understood that Fox had not taken his hat after all. Zebra was embarrassed. But he knew that the right thing to do is to find Fox, accept his mistake and apologize.

Fox was ever so please to see his best friend at his doorstep! He was worried sick thinking about why Zebra would not talk to him. Zebra explained his misunderstanding to his friend. Fox was so happy to have his friend back. He accepted Zebra's apology.
